Football Practice Dummies Teach Block Shedding Fundamentals in Defensive Line Drill

Successful football teams practice at full speed and treat it as the real game. Your football team needs the tools necessary to best recreate the game atmosphere and train muscle memory translating to execution on game day—and more wins for your team.

Using Krausko defensive training equipment in conjunction with the multi-purpose block shedding with tackle follow-through drill teaches defensive linemen a wide variety of physical techniques critical to plugging running lanes or getting after the quarterback.

The block shedding defensive line drill teaches a number of important techniques for defensive linemen. Rushers must maintain control of their bodies, work their feet smartly to create leverage, coordinate confident movements and keep their eyes level and downfield. If players lose control of themselves, they get out of position and cannot recover in time to make an effective attempt at a tackle. Natural reaction from players holding Krausko blocking pads ensure rushers in the drill condition themselves to realistic game action.

Players must hand-check the initial blocker using the proper hand placement, negotiate the retractable arms and movement of the blocker to dart past, square up the ball carrier and execute the right tackling technique to complete the drill.

Block Shedding with Tackle Follow-Through Drill Execution

  1. Line up two players equipped with The Colt or The Colt Pro blocking pads on a yard line 3 yards apart, facing the sideline. The further player is the acting ball carrier.
  2. Place a defensive lineman or linebacker on the sideline facing the blockers, in a two or three point stance.
  3. The defensive lineman may align himself straight on the blocker or at an angle, depending on the coaching focus.
  4. On the whistle, the blocker and ball carrier move forward toward the charging lineman.
  5. The lineman performs a rip, swim or bull rush on the first blocker, depending on the coach's instruction.
  6. The lineman sheds the first block and accelerates toward the ball carrier.
  7. The lineman performs proper tackling technique on the ball carrier wielding the blocking pad (no takedown).
  8. Coaches receive instant feedback on block shedding and tackling techniques.

If players lose control of themselves, they get out of position and cannot recover in time to make an effective attempt at a tackle. Natural reaction from players holding the Krausko blocking pads ensure rushers in the drill condition themselves to realistic game action.

The emphasis placed on teaching safe, fundamental techniques at the youth level has never been stronger. Teaching the proper methods for violent contact and instilling the right muscle memory is crucial to a young player’s healthy and successful development. The Krausko youth football training program allows young players at the Pee Wee, middle or high school levels to practice at full speed with or without pads to simulate game-speed with a low risk of injury.

The block shedding drill with tackle follow through drill instructs correct physical techniques in several ways for youth players. The drill prioritizes pad level, drive, hand placement and finish. Participants learn how to place their hands under the pads and inside the arms of blockers, drive them out of position and move quickly past them toward the ball carrier. Once the player reaches the ball carrier (also holding a Youth Colt blocking pad), the rusher must put themselves in the proper tackling position—square up, lower the pad level, wrap beneath the breastplate and drive.

The retractable arms on the Youth Colt blocking pad give young players a realistic, reactive moving target to negotiate in order to reach the target. The mobility of the pad holder gives rushers a training experience simulating the real game environment.
